Big Guys in Microbial Ecology

‘20세기 미생물학의 아버지’

‘16S rRNA를 이용한 phylogeny법 개발’

‘Archaea kingdom 발견’

Carl R. Woese

Carl Woese (born July 15, 1928) is an American microbiologist famous for defining the Archaea (a new domain or kingdom of life) in 1977 by phylogenetic analysis of 16S ribosomal RNA, a technique pioneered by Woese but which is now standard practice.

Woese was a MacArthur Fellow in 1984, was made a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1988, received the Leeuwenhoek medal (microbiology's highest honor) in 1992, and was a National Medal of Science recipient in 2000. In 2003, he received the Crafoord Prize from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. He was born in Syracuse, New York. Woese is currently a professor of Microbiology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

‘우리에겐 Environmental genome shotgun sequencing of the Sargasso Sea로 유명’

J. Craig Venter

While on faculty at the National Institutes of Health, Venter developed expressed sequence tags or EST’s, a revolutionary new strategy for discovering genes.

In 1992, he founded TIGR and decoded the genome of the first free-living organism, the bacterium Haemophilus influenzae, pioneering the new whole genome shotgun technique.

In 1998, Venter became the first president of Celera Genomics to sequence the human genome using the whole genome shotgun technique, new mathematical algorithms, and new automated DNA sequencing machines. The completed sequence of the human genome was published in February 2001 in the journal, Science. In addition to the human genome, Venter and his team at Celera sequenced the fruit fly, mouse, and rat genomes.

‘Stahl, Sogin, Delong, Doolittle 등이 Pace Lab에서 post-doc을 수행한 이후 현재 세계 최고 미생물학 대가로 성장한 것으로 알려져 최고의 mentor로도 유명함’

Norman R. Pace

University of Colorado

Norman Pace received a B.A. (1964) from Indiana University and a Ph.D. (1967) from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He has held faculty positions at the University of Colorado (1969-1984, 1999-present), Indiana University (1984-1996), and the University of California, Berkeley (1996-1999). Pace has published nearly 200 research articles in journals such as Science, Nature, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science (USA).

He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Academy of Microbiology, and a member of the National Academy of Science. In 1997, he received the Bicking Award from the National Speleological Society.

‘30여명의 박사 군단을 이끌고 매년 탑저널에 이름을 내고 있음’

‘Geobacter 한 놈만 끝까지..’

Derek Lovley

University of Massachusetts

He has been a postdoc with Carl Woese at the University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign in 1978 and was a member of Karl Schleifer’s research group at the Technical University, Munic from 1979-1983.

He has been involved in the description and taxonomic revision of more than 150 bacteria taxa (species, genera, families, orders and classes) and he has supervised more than 100 diploma and Ph. D. students. He has published more than 380 papers in refereed journals and he has written more than 60 book chapters. He is an editor and associate editor of several journals, including the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology, Environmental Microbiology, “The Prokaryotes”, online version, and Encyclopaedia of Life, Macmillan, London (1997-2000). At the OECD he serves as a German delegate in issues related to Biological Resource Centres. He has multiple functions in the International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes.

‘Woese방 포닥 이후 다른 대가들은 모두 16S rRNA를 이용한 분자생태학으로 집중한 반면, Stackebrandt는 미생물 phylogeny에 광범위하게 적용하였고 현재 미생물 분류학의 최고 대가로 자리잡음’

‘IJSEM에만 주로 publication이 나와 다른 대가들에 비해 한 수 떨어진다고 평가됨’

Erko Stackebrandt

DSMZ Director

He has been a postdoc with Carl Woese at the University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign in 1978 and was a member of Karl Schleifer’s research group at the Technical University, Munic from 1979-1983.

James M. Tiedje

Michigan State University

NAS Member Election Year: 2003, Section: Environmental Sciences and Ecology

Research/Expertise: microbial ecology, physiology and diversity, microbial genomics, bioremediation, ecology of antibiotic resistance

Tiedje has pioneered the use of molecular techniques to understand the nature and significance of the microbial diversity found in soils and sediments. His work has illuminated the fundamental contributions of microbial ecology to the nitrogen cycle and to the biodegradation of anthropogenic compounds. He is currently using genomics to more fully understand microbial diversity, speciation, and habitat adaptation in microbial community structure.
